European Cup, EURO or Champions League?
These names can sound similar, yet they lead to different football stories. EURO concerns national teams; the Champions League concerns clubs. The European Cup is part of the history of European club competition, not another name for the national-team tournament.
The women’s game also has distinct national and club competitions. UEFA’s official competition directory is the right starting point for identifying a tournament before exploring its format or records. Do not assume the men’s and women’s events share a calendar or qualification system.
Formats evolve. A guide must specify the season or edition instead of treating a group phase, league phase or knockout arrangement as timeless. Current format details should point to the organiser’s rules for that edition.
For readers, the practical approach is simple: choose club or national team, then the category, then the season. That small hierarchy makes fixtures, champions and historical comparisons much easier to understand.
